THE Fabricated Players have confirmed that due to budget constraints the clubhouse heating will this winter be provided by members rubbing their hands together and going “haaaaaa” into the room.

The new system, known as People-Powered Central Heating, was approved after treasurer Malcolm revealed that turning the actual boiler on would require “the sort of money we normally reserve for shows nobody comes to see”.

Chairwoman Margaret said: “Obviously we take member comfort extremely seriously.

“That’s why everyone will be expected to generate their own warmth.”

Under the scheme, members entering the clubhouse will be required to rub their hands vigorously for at least 30 seconds before directing several sustained “haaaaaaa” breaths towards the centre of the room.

Mary, who attended an early trial, said: “I asked whether we could just put the heating on.

“Malcolm looked at me like I’d suggested hiring Judi Dench.”

The society’s tech team has calculated that 35 adults simultaneously rubbing their hands together can increase the temperature of the rehearsal room by “something probably measurable”.

During particularly cold evenings, the ensemble will be asked to jog on the spot.

Brian said: “It’s actually quite efficient because we can combine heating with warm-ups.

“Last Tuesday we got the room from four degrees to four degrees but everyone personally felt much worse.”

Additional heat will be generated through theatrical activity.

Arguments about casting are expected to provide approximately three kilowatts, while somebody questioning a director’s artistic decision can raise the temperature around the production table by several degrees almost instantly.

Committee meetings are therefore expected to remain comfortably tropical.

The bar will operate as an emergency warming centre, with members encouraged to stand close to the fridge because its motor gives off a bit of heat.

Hot drinks will remain available, although members have been asked to hold their mugs rather than actually drink from them so the warmth “lasts longer”.

Margaret added: “Nobody is going to freeze.

“We have blankets, coats and 14 costumes from The Tempest.”

The society has also purchased one electric fan heater for emergencies.

It will be kept exclusively in the director’s room.

Members have been told that anyone complaining about the cold should rub faster.

If temperatures fall below zero, the committee will implement Stage Two of the winter heating plan, in which the entire company stands in a circle and goes:

“HAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA.”
