Urgent theatre repairs needed after misunderstanding over ‘breaking the fourth wall’

THE Fabricated Players have launched an emergency fundraising appeal for urgent building repairs after another theatrical misunderstanding resulted in Brian physically breaking the fourth wall.

The incident occurred during rehearsals for the society’s latest production when director Margaret asked the cast to experiment with “breaking the fourth wall” and directly engaging with the audience.

Brian, still relatively new to theatrical terminology, disappeared backstage and returned carrying a sledgehammer.

Margaret said: “I explained that the fourth wall is the imaginary barrier between the actors and the audience.

“I really thought the word imaginary had done enough work there.”

Witnesses say Brian carefully counted the walls surrounding the stage before identifying the one nearest the auditorium and striking it repeatedly.

Mary said: “We heard this enormous crash and Brian shouting, ‘NEARLY THROUGH’.

“By the time we got there, you could see the car park.”

Brian defended his actions, claiming the instruction was considerably less ambiguous than previous theatrical terminology.

He said: “Margaret specifically said she wanted the fourth wall broken.

“So I broke it.

“Frankly, if theatre people want things left intact, they need to stop using verbs like break.”

The damage is estimated at £11,000 and has left the rehearsal room exposed to the elements.

Malcolm said: “On the positive side, it’s really opened up the space.

“On the negative side, there’s a Ford Focus where Stage Left used to be.”

The committee initially explored incorporating the damage into the production as an innovative piece of immersive theatre.

Margaret said: “We considered saying it represented the collapse of boundaries between performer and spectator.

“Then it started raining.”

The society has now launched an urgent fundraising campaign entitled REBUILD THE FOURTH WALL, although publicity officer Mary has been asked to make absolutely clear that this refers to an actual wall this time.

Planned fundraising events include a quiz night, raffle and sponsored bricklaying session.

Members have also been asked whether they know anyone “who does walls”.

Brian has volunteered.

The committee has declined.

New signage has meanwhile been installed throughout the theatre explaining common theatrical terminology.
